Fire Extinguishers

Menlo Park Fire always emphasizes that your safety comes first! An extinguisher is only meant for small, contained fires (about the size of a wastebasket) and after 911 has been called. Never have your only exit blocked; know when to leave! If the fire grows rapidly, fills the room with thick smoke, or your extinguisher runs out, get out immediately and close the door behind you.

There are different classes/types of extinguishers. The most common is the ABC fire extinguisher.

  • Class A (Trash, Wood, Paper): For ordinary combustibles like paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics.

  • Class B (Liquids): For flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, grease, and paint.

  • Class C (Electrical): For energized electrical equipment like appliances, wiring, and outlets.

  • Class D (Metals): For combustible metals (often found in industrial environments or batteries).

  • Class K (Kitchen): For commercial cooking media like cooking oils, animal fats, and vegetable fats.
