MPFPD Wildland Program

The Wildland program for Menlo Park Fire District is responsible for the training, equipping and staffing all of Menlo Parks firefighters when it comes to wildland incidents.

Annual training consists of a S-190 refresher course which is a state required course in order to deploy to major incidents or campaign fires. South Zone wildland training, which consists of all types of wildland specific training, ranging from fire shelter deployments, progressive hose lays, hand line construction, radio communications, structure protection and triage and many other items needed. Finally, we have specialty classes that we organize and teach in house including the S-223 line paramedic/emt course in house and are looking at bringing in an outside instructor to teach an S series class annually.

Fire Station 4 on Alameda De Las Pulgas is designated Menlo Park’s wildland station. If there was an immediate need incident in the county, these members would be the first to be deployed. Engine 104 is designated our out of county engine and deploys to campaign fires all throughout the state. Personnel must commit to a deployment for a minimum of 14 days and it is not uncommon for this piece of apparatus to be deployed for several  weeks at a time with personnel having to swap out due to a maximining their deployment time. We also have Engine 504 which is a smaller piece of apparatus with a 400 gallon tank that can be cross staffed with personnel from station 4 or be deployed as part of a strike team.

Menlo Park Fire also has employees who are trained to deploy to campaign fires as single resources. We allow up to 6 line EMT’s/Paramedics to be deployed at a time and have capabilities to deploy 2 strike team leaders. We also have members trained as medical unit leaders, Class 2 fallers, safety officers and are currently training personnel to be deployable as communications operators.

Even though Menlo Park does not have a large wildland urban interface area in our immediate response area, we understand the need to be willing and able to support our neighboring agencies and the rest of the state through the mutual aid system and are committed to answering the call when needed.
